Operation Iraqi Freedom Monument

Operation Iraqi Freedom

During Operation Iraqi Freedom (OIF), the 5th Marine Regiment, known as the “Fighting Fifth,” played a pivotal role in major combat operations, including the initial invasion of Iraq in 2003 and subsequent missions in key areas such as Fallujah and Ramadi. These deployments came with significant sacrifices, resulting in the loss of numerous Marines and Sailors. To honor these fallen heroes, the 5th Marine Regiment Memorial Park was established at Camp Pendleton as a solemn tribute to those who made the ultimate sacrifice.

The Dana Point 5th Marine Regiment Support Group (DPSG) played an instrumental role in funding and constructing the park, ensuring that the bravery and dedication of the regiment are forever remembered. The first monument commissioned by DPSG was the Operation Iraqi Freedom (OIF) Memorial. Brigadier General Larry D. Nicholson, who commanded Regimental Combat Team 5 in Fallujah, personally sketched the initial design of the monument—a Texas-style barrier drawn on a napkin—as a way to honor and never forget those who gave their lives for our freedom in the Iraqi War. This vision came to fruition in 2009 with the dedication of the Iraqi Freedom Barrier, which now stands in the 5th Marine Memorial Park as a place of reflection and remembrance.

At any given time, visitors may witness families of those who served in Iraq, Marine brothers, and others who come to pray and pay their respects at this solemn memorial. In addition to the Iraqi Freedom Barrier, remaining funds from the project were used to install a beautiful bronze Boots Display in the 5th Marines Chow Hall in the 62 area, further honoring the sacrifices of the regiment.

It is the honor and privilege of the Dana Point 5th Marine Regiment Support Group to forever remember the brave Fighting Fifth Marines who were wounded and killed in action. We share in the sorrow and the pain alongside our Marines, Sailors, Wounded Warriors, and Gold Star families as they pay tribute to those they will never see again. The 5th Marine Regiment Memorial Park stands as a lasting reminder of the courage, dedication, and sacrifices of those who fought for freedom, ensuring their legacy endures for generations to come.
